Yet another Ursa scare

We dropped Ursa off this morning for TPLO surgery. It turned out that either degeneratively or in just one big snap last weekend, she trashed her equivalent of an anterior cruciate ligament. From the amount of movement in the joint when the surgeon did the drawer test, it was obvious that it was never going to regenerate enough to give her useful weight bearing movement in that leg on its own. She's not even 5 yet and we hope she's going to make it to AT LEAST 10; that's a long time to have an only marginal useful leg.

I spent the morning trying to concentrate on work and not fret, but was only marginally successful. We heard from the hospital around lunch time. The procedure went fine with nothing unexpected. She had completely ruptured the ligament, so surgery was a good call - there was nothing there to rehabilitate. The good news is that the surgeon couldn't see any damage to the meniscus, which can be a complication. It's still possible for it to be damaged post surgery, but the odds are lower, so that's good.

Ursa will spend the night at the hospital, on intravenous pain control and so they can be sure that she burns off all the anesthetic without any problems. The Consort will pick me up from work tonight and we'll stop by to have a visit and bring her some dinner. Last time she was there, she got a whole consultation room to herself, because they didn't have a kennel big enough - I wonder what her digs will be this time?

The scary part is over; now we just have to get through 8-12 weeks of limited activity. That's gonna be fun!  I'm have to contact the rehab clinic in Okotoks and set up an appointment for an evaluation and see how much it is to use their underwater treadmill. I'm not sure if I'll sleep better tonight from the relief or badly again because she won't be there humph-ing at the end of bed.
