We'd already decided to head to Edmonton on Saturday morning, but it turned out to be a good decision, as the province was flattened by mostly westerly winds Friday night. We'd have run the risk of being blown right off the highway! As it was, the highway was dry, but in the city, the streets were a mess. They'd had rain Thursday night on top of their snow accumulations, the wind right after that just polished up all the side streets and sidewalks into a frictionless surface. Yikes!
We got in to Edmonton with plenty of time for Stuart to head to St. Albert and spend a chunk of money on new minis, while I did some fruitless shopping. Then it was off for haircuts. Marghie seems to be doing quite well, which was nice to see. Then we met Mom and Priscilla at Dadeo's for dinner; where I stocked up on po'boy and sweet potato fries. From there, we skated our way to the Transalta Arts Barns to see The Edmonton Queen: The Final Voyage. For those who didn't grow up in Edmonton or aren't officionados of the cross dressing scene, Darren Hagen was instrumental in "dragging" the underground queen scene of the '80's into the light of day. He's actually an amazing comedic playwright with a growing cataloge, but The Edmonton Queen was his first show. It's basically an autobiographical piece, talking about how he left small town Alberta and clawed his way to the top of the drag scene. It's hilarious and sad and wonderful. This is the last time he plans to do the show, as he says he's getting too old. I've seen it before, but Saturday's show really was great. Mostly because lots of his friends were in the audience, leading to a certain amount of unscripted chatter. At one point, he launched into a demonstrative bit of the more usual drag show offering: lip syncing accompanied by extravangant movement. By the end, he was fighting for breath and a bit sweaty. When the applause died down, he said, "That's a lot easier when you're 19 and not wearing a corset." There was a snigger from his partner, who was sitting in the front row and Darren's comment was, "And you can just f**k off!"
The play has actually been published as a novella and I used to have a lovely signed copy. However, I lent it to Miranda and since we're not talking, it's gone. However, it was a great excuse to buy a copy of the new printing with the extra material! And I even got it signed. :)
Stuart did well, but the late night did him in and he slept for a large part of Sunday. He skipped the movie, so it was just me, Mom and Dad that went to see InkHeart. I haven't read the book yet, which probably explains why I liked it. It wasn't great art, but I thought it was well paced, well shot and the special effects were good. Of course, having both Paul Bettany and Brendan Fraser in one movie is never going to hurt my opinion of it! We spent the rest of the evening with Stuart's parents, having dinner and a visit.
Monday we were up early again to visit doctors. I got my physical and all my annual bloodwork done; she also said that I don't have full blown plantar's fasciitis YET, but recommended that I see a podiatrist before it gets worse. It gets worse than this?!?!?! Ok, so I'm looking for a podiatrist. Bah. Stuart also had his physical and got a prescription for yet more antibiotics - this is getting out of hand. Fortunately, I'm hoping that our next visit will help. We had an appointment with my favorite naturopath/homeopathy practitioner, Dr. Robert Pearman. He gave Stuart some stuff that should help him sleep and something to bolster his immune system in the mean time. Here's keeping our fingers crossed!
We finished up with Robert about 2pm and hit the road for home. It was sunny and the roads were clear, so the drive was fine. We got home in time to unload the car before heading out again for our dinner reservation. Wednesday will be our two year anniversary, so we had sushi at Shijiki to celebrate, then swung by Market Mall to get Marble Slab for dessert. It was a great way to end the weekend.
Of course, this morning I ended up sliding down the hill to work - backwards, on my hands and knees - and scraped my knee, so I know that the idle is over.
