Life and death, not always mine...

So far, it's been a week of ups and downs. Geoff's grandma passed away Monday night. She'd been sick for a while, but had recently started to get a lot worse, so I think it was a case where everyone was just as glad that the suffering wasn't drawn out. But another Grandma/Great Grandma has left the world, and that always makes things a bit sad.

The weather has been simply charming this week, with sunshine and highs above 0C, but we all knew it couldn't last. It started to get colder last night and it's now been snowing for hours as we watch the thermometer keep dropping. It's currently -14 with a windchill of -26 and it hasn't bottomed out. It is only January after all! However, the sidewalks were finally starting to become passable again, so I'd happily deal with arctic temperatures if only it wouldn't dump more precipitation. Sigh.

I won't go in to the details here, because of issues of client confidentiality, but it seems that I have to expand my attempt at witticism. I've been known to comment that they need to stop giving out Driver's Licenses in Cracker Jacks boxes, but it now seems that you can get a medical degree that way too. Scary, scary, scary. If your doctor says something that doesn't make sense, PLEASE don't assume that it's just you. There's a very good chance that they don't have the foggiest clue what they're talking about - but they're still happy to dictate the circumstances of your life (or death).

Today is going to be a long day. A full day of work, followed by a work-out at the gym, dinner and the first three hour class for our Colour Theory course. I've warned my co-workers that I may be grumpy on Fridays for the next few months. I've done colour theory before, of course, in a number of settings, so I'm hoping the instructor is interesting and intelligent enough to make this something more than a slog. We'll see.

And finally, Barack Obama was sworn in as President of the United States this week. I'll rate him as a huge improvement, just for his ability to deliver a grammatically correct and topically logical sentence, but other than that I reserve judgement. Even if I grant that he's honest in his opinions and wishes, he has a herculean task ahead of him, with no way to accomplish it without pissing off a lot of folks who are incapable of understanding the concept of "long term planning." And he could still turn out to be just another species of lying, self-serving politician - just with better camoflage.

You're a lot less cynical about the Obama thing than I am. I'm already convinced he won't last two years because there are too many Americans who find the idea of a black man in office Un-American and will be willing to do something about it to restore the glory of their country.
