First camping of the year

After DragonSlayer, Stuart and I took a day to madly prepare before heading off for a week of camping. We prepped most of our food in advance, cleaned the house and packed all the clothes and gear that we would need. Our plan was to hit the road by 10am Monday morning, but, as usual, I think it was closer to noon before we were on our way.

Oh well, we didn't have any particular deadlines, just a general wish to arrive, set-up and have dinner before it got too late. Which we managed! The drive up was uneventful, which is what I like in a drive. The only stand-outs were that the bridge into William Switzer park was down to one lane for repair work and that we briefly saw a black bear cub skedaddle across the highway once we'd passed.

Camping during the week is absolutely the best, when you can manage it. The loop we were on was barely 1/3 full for the first few nights and for the end of the week, it was down to us and one or two other sites. No late night drunks, no screeching kids, just loons, whippoorwills, crows and the occasional woodpecker. We slept 10-12 hours every night, ate wonderful Whole30 compliant food, took a 1 to 2 hour walk every day and spent the rest of the time reading, mostly. We had coleslaw, cucumber salad, mango & avocado salsa, chicken wings, lamb chops, prawns, steak, pork chops, roasted veggies, ground pork, sweet potato hash and eggs. And we took the SodaStream with us, so we could make spearmint and peppermint bubbly drinks on demand.

On Thursday, we jumped in the car and drove in to Jasper. We had a walk around town and then went out to hike the Five Lakes Loop. We had lunch there and stopped at the Miette Hotsprings for a soak on the way back.  Bliss.

The weather was generally good, although there was some rain on Thursday and a few thunderstorms after we'd gone to bed. It was very cooperative though - the rain always came when we'd planned to be somewhere under cover or in the tent. It always cleared up when we wanted to go out and do something!

On Friday, we packed up camp and headed in for a quick visit with Stuart's parents at their trailer. It was a short visit though, 'cause I got moving slowly and we didn't want to get home too late. The drive back was a little busier than the drive out, but mostly smooth sailing. The only two incidents were on the south side of Sundre.  First a logging truck thought he had space to pass and nearly ran us down.  However, the adrenaline from that was helpful when a young elk bounced across the road in front of us a few minutes later!

All in all, it was a wonderful vacation and my only complaint is that it was far too short. I was happy to be back in my bed that night, but far less pleased with the loud parties that my neighbours' kids hosted that night and the next night.
