Raise high the roofbeams...

Stuart and I tried to have a relaxed and unproductive time for the recent long weekend, and succeeded so well that I didn't even get around to posting about it.  We slept in, we walked the puppy and we saw a couple of movies.

Despicable Me was great!  I mean, you knew broadly what was going to happen before the previews were over, but the trip through was fun and there were some very funny moments.  It was feel good brain candy and just right for a couple of burnt out pseudo adults.

Inception was way over at the other end of the spectrum.  You definitely had to engage a few brain cells to keep track of what was happening, but you were well rewarded for the effort.  The characters were almost arch-typically simple, but they were well realized, the cinematography supported the mood of the film and there were enough bangs, booms and fights to hold your interest.  Plus attractive people in great costumes - yeah!!!  I think my ill-spent youth buried in scifi novels may have resulted in a slightly less "blown away" response than Stuart's to the main plot device, but I certainly appreciated the elegance with which it was realized.  Good movie!

The most recent weekend was back to the grind time.  The garage roof that we bought was not in great shape, so we called on the friends again to do repairs.  Michelle started the charge of friends at around 8am and away we went.  By the time we called it "done" around 6pm or so, Michelle, Dave and Steve had all been up on the roof with Stuart.  Heidi made several trips with me to Home Depot for stuff, to get pizza for lunch, helped on nail patrol in the grass and was part of the "shingle slinging" team.  Kaylene helped with shingle slinging and Simone was just darn cute!

Michelle deserves unending kudos for being the one person who's shown up to help every time we put out a call for help (along with being unendingly generous with her tool stash!)  Dave was incredibly helpful, lending us his air compressor and being the "experienced" one on the crew.  He did a lion's share of the work ripping out the damaged roofing panels and replacing them.  Heidi would probably have done more, if she wasn't rehabbing her recent broken wrist and frankly I've been amazed with how willing she's been to show up and pitch in anyway!  Kaylene had to be a mom most of the time, but she still managed to help me keep everyone hydrated and it was just great to have a chance to visit.

We'd been afraid it might rain, but actually it ended up sunny and hot.  Maybe a little more sunny and hot than the work crew would have preferred, but we're all getting old enough that sunscreen and water bottles were kept in regular rotation.  So in one day, we got a new roof on the double garage and I can't say "thanks" to everyone involved enough!!!

People scattered off and I finished tidying up while Stuart cleaned up.  Before he could collapse permanently, I loaded him in the car, picked up Michelle and we met Nicole at Chili's for dinner.  I have to say that it normally wouldn't be on our restaurant radar, but it was close and I had a gift certificate.  It turned out to be surprisingly good!  In the "we may just go back" good category, in fact.  We'll see if it stands up to evaluation when we aren't exhausted and starving... LOL.
