This past weekend was spent in Edmonton. We got haircuts (yeah!), I saw a couple of shiatsu clients, we loaded up the trailer with more of our stuff from the parental units houses, but most of all, we celebrated my Grandma's 92 birthday.
My Grandma, who's become known as GG (Great Grandma) since my niece was born, is awesome! Leaving aside the hairnets, which she doesn't wear, she's really like Eddie Izzard's "Old Ladies" skit. (Sorry I couldn't find a link.) She had to give up driving after she had a TIA and lost the vision in one eye, but she still goes to art class and produces award winning paintings. She crafts and helps out with events in her condo and generally just keeps carrying on. In the last few months, she's started to show her age a bit, her vision and her hearing are diminished, which makes large gatherings difficult for her, but she's still totally on the ball mentally. She's the last of my grandparents living and they absolutely saved the best for last!
Mom spent most of Saturday getting ready for the party - cleaning and cooking. We had meatballs, crab dip, meat, cheese and buns for sandwiches, German potato salad, green salad and I made mascarpone rhubarb whip for dessert. Everybody showed up: me and Stuart, Megan, Geoff and the kids, Steve, Hikari and Taiyo, Eileen and Peter, Ken and Caroline (although they were very late), Karen, Laurie... am I missing anyone? My parents and Grandma, of course!
So we all had a great time. I'm really hoping that when it's her time, GG can just go quick, rather than dragging on feeling horrible for years, like Grandpa did. So I'm happy when we get a chance to spend time with Grandma and tell her how much we all appreciate her.
