Just 'cause we're crazy like that, Stuart and I hosted a little get together on Saturday night. My thought was that it would be nice for everyone to have a chance to get together with people they liked and relax with some potluck. No shopping lists, no annoying relatives... just fun. I think it went well. We had Megan, Geoff and the kids, Steve, Michelle, Nicole, Dionne, Heidi, Kevin and Kathleen, Mike and Ang, which pretty much filled the house! With that group, of course, the food was amazing: roast olives, a cheese tray, a sausage tray, a veggie tray, a cracker tray, nasi gorang, hummus, spinach dip, pumpkin pie with ginger cream and white chocolate cheesecake. We all munched and talked and watched youtube and generally had a good time. It doesn't bode well for New Year's Eve though, since the last folks had trickled out before 10:30! I did get a new dirty joke to tell Dad though, so it was all worth it. :)
We tidied up the dishes and went to bed, because we had to be up in good time on Sunday morning. Stuart was a hero and basically organized everything while I dragged around the house half conscious. We loaded everything in the car (including Ursa!) and were on the road by 9:10 - only a little late and it got us to the gas station on Highway 22 right on time to meet Heidi and her friend Barry. Then we all had a lovely morning caravan through the gently falling snow to the Burstall Pass trail head. We climbed into our full gear and then it was off on the first official snowshoe of the season. Since it's early in the season, we spent about 40% of our time with Barry breaking trail, but the other 60% was on track that's already been pretty well packed. Surprisingly, the one who had the hardest time wasn't me, but Ursa!
She did better when we took off the doggie boots, but even webbed feet are of limited use when the snow is still soft and fluffy and you weigh 100lbs! She basically spent the whole time when we were breaking trailing postholing. Even the passage of four pairs of snowshoes didn't pack things down enough to keep her afloat. Stuart tried to take her back to the car, but she didn't want to go. She and Stuart spent most of the morning at the back of the trail though, trying to stay up and off of everyone's snowshoes. LOL In the end, we were out for about an hour and a half - just a warm up for Stuart really, but the rest of us thought it was just about right. We drove into Canmore for lunch at the Grizzly Paw and then it was back to real life.
As a bonus, the puppy slept for most of the day and I had a really good sleep myself!
