Thank the gods, I was right. The Mount Royal troop did much better with comedy and last night's performance was very enjoyable. They'd set it in a 50's backdrop, with the Inn becoming a diner and the "elves" were dressed up as cheerleaders. It still wasn't a completely polished performance (don't you hate it when you can see an actor's face go blank for a second or two as they prepare to pull an expression on cue?) but it was very enjoyable.
We also discovered that the River Cafe picnic baskets are not particularly portion controlled. The sandwiches were noticeably smaller this time and so, I think, was the bag of cherries. Oh well - that's what the concession stand offers popcorn for!
