Not for the squeamish

I finally got some sleep last night and felt like I was lined up with the clock here.  Which will be great for two more days and then contribute to vicious jet lag when I get home.  There's just no winning.  I spent the morning learning about protocols that allow SCADA systems to talk to each other - the excitement, it never ends!

That pretty much wrapped up everything that I was specifically here to do, so I spent the afternoon trying to annotate my notes, so they'll make sense when I get home (fingers crossed) and doing some other non-Serbia specific work.  Then I watched a web cast about a product that we are considering for use in the future.  It was being broadcast in the late morning in NA, so about dinner time here.

Angela and Collin had meetings until 10 tonight (mid-afternoon at home) so I got a ride back to the hotel by myself.  And here comes the part that delicate readers might want to skip.

I got dinner at McDonald's.  I always eat once at McDonald's when I travel, just for the purposes of comparison.  Where offered, I generally try whatever the local offering is.  Apparently some McDonald's here have pitas, but not at the one just across from the hotel.  Instead, I opted for their current promotion: the 1955 burger.
"Local" option
Like all McDonald's outside of NA, the burger itself was mostly gristle.  The toppings were generous though: lettuce (leaves, not cut up), tomato slices, cheese (that actually tasted like cheese!) and caramelized onion.  Not a gourmet treat, but it was eatable. The fries were slightly different... a bit chewier somehow. If I had to guess, I say a slightly different cooking oil or heat or something.

Since the restaurant was close and I wanted to get my boots off (more on that later), I chose take out.  They take their packaging seriously here!
Serious take out
Sturdy
The bottom of the bag is actually reinforced to help the cup stay up!

The interior was not typical of a NA McDonald's either.  The ordering counter was very similar, but the eating area looked very upscale.  Still branded to a farethewell, resilient and easy to clean, but in a much nicer looking way.  Calmer colours, subtler branding and less aggressively "get you out of here fast" furniture.

I didn't hang around though, because my feet were hurting.  I thought that having worn my new boots for a couple of days and choosing lighter socks today, I could get away with putting my arch supports in.  Turns out no. They were fine all over except the toe box.  The cap was tougher than the top of my toes.
Ouch!
It's not actually cut, but the flesh around that diagonal line is all bruised and quite ouchy.  Darn!

Oh well.  Tomorrow afternoon, I'm dragging Ang off to see the Danube and the Fortress.  And I'm still hoping to meet up with someone from the long hair boards, so stay tuned, I may still get better pictures!

Sadly no - we haven't had time. The plan is to walk to the Fortress today, so hopefully we can see some more of that stuff on route.
