Rockin' Out

I feel like this should be V's post, since she often talks about her work with the Girls'/Ladies' Rock Camp.  But no, this is me enthusing about the Queen Extravaganza, which we saw last night. I went with Stuart and my mom and we had a blast!

This isn't a Queen cover band, more of an homage to a great band. Stuart is the real afficionado; he's watched all the broadcasts of when they were looking for singers, etc. and knows all their names and bios and stuff. I'd heard that they found a French Canadian who was a ringer for Freddie, but I hadn't watched any of the YouTube footage. They actually have four singers, three male and one female, who take turns as frontman (person?) and doing back-up vocals. The crowd took a little while to warm up to the woman. I think she was there as an acknowledgement of Freddie's very split gender personality and her voice was very suitable; too bad her costumes were just... odd.

The three men all had great voices, very powerful. Marc (?) really does sound like Freddie, and he's obviously worked to pick up Freddie's gestures, manners and facial expressions. Long haired guy had a strong stage presence and was obviously having a blast.  He also did a very credible David Bowie for "Under Pressure". Short haired guy had a great voice but the weakest on-stage persona; I found him alternately wooden or over-the-top.

They did every Queen song that I can think of that you've heard played on the radio for the last 30+ years, plus a few of the lesser known songs for the diehard Queen geeks. They encouraged a lot of audience participation as well, I think because honestly, how could you stop people?? We had seats about 10 rows from the stage right in the center, so I was deafened by the speakers, blinded by the lights and was losing my voice by the end of the night.  It was great!
