Knifed

I'm not a whiz in the kitchen, but I can usually exercise enough common sense to avoid injury.  Usually.  Last night I was trying to slice a bagel to make my lunch for today.  I thought I'd grabbed the bread knife, but I had the meat knife instead.  Honestly though, I'm not sure it would have mattered much which sharp metal implement I was using.

I had about 2 milliseconds to realize that I was in trouble... not enough to stop me from slicing down into the side of my left middle finger.  There was about 3 seconds of "well, that doesn't hurt as much as I expected" and then my nerves caught up with the shock.  Holy bleeping bleep!  I've had some nasty paper cuts, but I've never before injured a finger to this degree and I was amazed and appalled at how much it hurt.  I haven't gotten up the nerve to peel off the bandage, but from memory, I'd say I cut about half way down to the bone.  It bled a lot and didn't seem inclined to stop until I'd held pressure on it for several minutes.

However, the bleeding did stop and the cut is in an area that's not prone to pulling open, so I didn't go to be evaluated for stitches.  The regular bandage hasn't collected any fresh blood, so I'll pick up some butterfly bandages and clean it up again tonight.  I don't have Stuart's sulfa drug problem, so some topical ointment and I should be good to go.  If it's really gross and interesting, I'll try and post some pics for you.

I have been ginger with it today and Lord knows, it's not helping with typing.  Which obliquely leads to this, which I discovered today: a fanfic contest.  It's not like I don't have enough to do this month, but the whole thing just intrigues me.  I have absolutely no plot ideas, but I'm sticking the pic in the back of my head and I'll see if my subconscious delivers anything worth writing up.
