It's poplar fuzz season and boy, am I feeling it. I don't think I've had a seasonal allergy reaction this bad, since years ago when the field near Edmonton was switched from wheat to Canola. I lost a month that time, before I figured out that it was allergies and not "just" a cold. This time around, I'm not sure if it's just the allergies or if I've picked up some kind of nasty as well. The problem being that antihistamines don't work that well for me, so taking them won't clear up my symptoms completely, even if that's all I was suffering from!
For those who want to share the misery, here is the list of nasties: sinus congestion, swollen glands and irritated mucus membranes causing a nasty, painful dry cough (that's the worst), itchy eyes and skin; all of it contributing to very poor sleep at night.
When it gets like this, I do feel like those stupid antihistamine commercials, where they show the world through a fuzzy filter. It's hard to think clearly and I'm constantly distracted by the details of how miserable I feel. However, when I break down and take the Benadryl, I swap some of those symptoms for others. The congestion gets knocked back a bit and it takes the edge off the throat irritation, but there's a reason that the box says not to operate vehicles or heavy machinery. I walked into doorways twice this morning.
It may be exaggeration, but I feel like 2010 is turning out to be a miserable year, health wise. I'm just over one thing when the next kicks in. Of course, it's been a bit of a year for stress too, so I doubt very much that helps.
