Well, after the responsibility of picking a house we actually think we want to live in, the next scariest thing was getting the mortgage approved. Yes, yes, we had a pre-approval, but apparently that means less than it used to. Our mortgage broker had told us about people that were getting turned down for the "live" deal - so it's possible. Our final purchase price actually was under the maximum we'd been pre-approved for, but I was still a bit nervy about the whole thing. We're a go though - CMHC approval and everything, so that's one more worry off the ol' brain.
Last night, Stuart and I went to PC Financial and set up a joint account for the house payments. He'd set up and walked away from an account there at the beginning of the year, because he wasn't happy with the service. However, I've had mine almost since they started without any problems, and not having to pay monthly service fees for what will basically just be a place to hold funds for paying our bills just makes too much sense. So, I dragged him back and they got it set up lickety-split. By the time we got home, I could login and see the account online.
We'll need to have proof of fire insurance at a minimum, when the whole thing goes to the lawyer, but Stuart has already talked to the provider that we have our renter's insurance through. Switching everything over to home owner's coverage won't be a problem, so that's off the list too.
So, the last thing to do is the house inspection, which will happen tomorrow night. Geoff's family's friend has agreed to do it for us at a very reasonable rate; he's an engineer who builds houses for a living and Geoff seems to revere him, so I don't have too many worries about him missing anything. And as a bonus, Mom is going to come up for the weekend early enough to puppy sit while we do it, so we can both be there to listen, watch and ask questions.
We've arranged to sign all the paperwork on Saturday and then we get to take a little break. Gerry and company will be off watching him get married, so we can't go check out flooring until he gets back. The shingles on the garage will likely wait until everything's moved and we've got at least the basics unpacked. And packing boxes before the end of May will just make the whole wait seem longer, not to mention having to trip over them all the time!
In other news, Megan still hasn't had the baby. Craziness!
We've signed up to take part in the Calgary Humane Society annual Dog Jog, to raise money to support their services. This is a fund raising activity, so here's my pitch: please go to our webpage and donate something! We've bought your kids' coupon books, magazine subscriptions, etc. and it's time for payback. :) Even $5 or $10 would be appreciated - you don't really need all the sugar in that Caramel Mocha double shot latte with whip cream today... do you? Here's the link to our Donation page. Thanks!
